Hozogawa River Boat Ride
If you do go to Kyoto (and “When Japan” advises against it without specific planning or if you have a lot of time in Japan), then the boat ride down Hozogawa River is worth a look, especially if you are board with looking at temples.

How to get there
Many people stay in the Arashiyama area as this is famous for hot spring hotels and it quite a developed tourist area (while keeping a local feel). If you are staying in Arashiyama then the best station to go from will be Torokko Arashiyama Station, which will no doubt be a short walk away.
The directions on Google Maps are not correct so use the map below. There are signs also (or you can follow the people as they will all be going in the same direction).
