When the Japanese say “Ham-bur-gu”, they mean the patty only Hamburg Steak that is a popular dish in Japan. Confuse foreigners who hear “Hamburger” often wonder where the bun is.

A Hamburg Steak is a popular option for children who find a proper steak a bit too much to eat, but adults also like the meal when eating out at an inexpensive Family Restaurant such as Denny’s or Saizeriya. At a steak restarant the meat in the Hamburg patty will be of the same quality as the steaks so is an extra special meal in and of itself. A common tactic is to double up the patties “Double Hamburg” or to coat the top in cheese (or have “Cheese in Hamburg”). The “Demi-glass” sauce is a common componant of a traditional Hamburg Steak and will always come already poured on top, or else in a small container so you can add it yourself. The plates are often very hot and the staff will warn you before setting the meal down on the table.
