Hidden away in the no-man’s land between Tokyo, Chiba and Saitama, Hondoji Temple is an island of calm that has stunning displays of autumn leaves come the end of November, with very few foreign tourists.

Hondoji is a great temple to visit while in Japan during the end of the November as the autumn leaves display is one of the best in the Tokyo area.

Outside of the autumn season it is still an impressive temple complex that is worth a visit regardless, especially as its location away from the center of Tokyo means there are fewer foreign tourists.

It is open from 8am to 5pm (last entry 4:30) and costs ¥500 for adults, free for elementary school children and below (12 or under). The temple is close to Kita-kogane station and you can get there direct from Tokyo station on the Chiyoda line, taking just under 1 hour. The temple is a 10 minute walk from the station out of the north exit.
