Matsushima Boat View
Matsushima is a natural bay 40 minutes north of Sendai that is considered one of the three most scenic spots in Japan. As part of a Sendai tour Matsushima is a must, with easy access by train and plenty of places to eat, stay and visit.

How to get to Matsushima

Matsushima is a 40 minute train ride north from Sendai, which is in turn a fairly snappy 1h30m Shinkansen from Tokyo along the Tohoku line (make sure it’s the line to Sendai and not to Yamagata). The closest station is Matsushima Kaigan, which is a few minutes walk away from all the activities. You can also stop at Hon-shiogama station and take a ferry to Matsushima from the Marine Gate facility, which is a short walk from the station. Details are on the official website (confusing) or better, check out the “When Japan” article for a proper explanation.
