If you are looking for an atmospheric place to go out for the evening then Monzen-nakacho is a great, local drinking area full of Japanese style Izakaya (pubs) and restaurants, full of Japanese salarymen out on after work with their colleagues. While it is not the most tourist friendly of locations, you can be assured of an authentic experience should you have enough courage to enter into a bustling joint and have a go ordering from the Japanese menu.

You can walk here from Tsukishima should you have finished your okonomi-yaki and be in the mood for further drinks before the night has ended. If coming by the subway then get out at exit 3 or 4 and head up the main street as far as Tomioka Hachimanu Shrine. This Google street map link shows you the direction you need to head in.

If you reach the Tokyu Stay hotel you have run out of interesting places so best turn back towards the subway station again.

There are a lot of side streets with even more “local” establishments. If you are up for the challenge of trying to figure out what to order when the only menus are in Japanese with no pictures, then have a go. A favorite of When Japan is Tomisui, an excellent fish restaurant with friendly staff and a great atmosphere. If you get stuck, point to some pictures uploaded by other patrons here (listed by newest first so you know they are on the menu). It seems the conger eel rice bowl(穴子天丼 ana-go ten-don)is a clear favorite, so maybe try that.

Remember that there are no 24h trains in Tokyo so don’t forget to check for your last train, unless you are prepared to get a taxi back. to stay out all night.
