Beppu is considered one of the hot spring capitals of Japan, with the entire town’s identity based on the numerous public baths, hot spring hotels and resorts, and the volcanic pools called the 7 Hells. If in Kyushu, staying at a hot spring in Beppu is a must.

What to do in Tsuetate?
The only purpose of such a remote hot spring town is to relax at a hot spring inn and delight in the excellent food and soak in the idyllically frames hot spring baths. You aren’t going to find a lot of information in English. There is a list in Japanese of all local inns here. A recommended inn is Hizenya that also has a hot spring called Kissho no Yu, which you can enter without staying at the inn. The inn and the hot springs are not in the same location. If you want to enjoy just the hot springs then the entrance is here. There is a free bus from the inn to the hot springs that takes 3 minutes. Jalan is an excellent site for booking hotels and inns in Japan. Book. Here is a link to the local hotels (check the locations on the map first before booking).
