Yufuin
Beppu is considered one of the hot spring capitals of Japan, with the entire town’s identity based on the numerous public baths, hot spring hotels and resorts, and the volcanic pools called the 7 Hells. If in Kyushu, staying at a hot spring in Beppu is a must.

What to do in Yufuin?
The main street (Yunotsubo Street) is lined with small shops, restaurants and other niche locations such as small art galleries. The Yufuin Showa Museum (official site) is excellent and shows life-size mockups of post war Japan life. The Yufuin Floral Village is a recreation of an English country town so perhaps not so interesting for all tourists. At the end of the main street walk is Lake Kinrin, which is apparently known for it’s picturesque morning mists. A stay at one of the many hot spring inns would enable early rising enough to view.
