As one of the Fuji 5 Lakes, Lake Motosuko gives stunning views of Mount Fuji but with extreme inconvenience of access.

Lake Motosuko is an underdeveloped lake to the west of Lake Saiko, accessed by bus or car. There is very little to do other than enjoy outdoor activities, walking in nature or the views of Mount Fuji. There are limited hotels and Japanese Inns and therefore limited people.

Views of Mount Fuji

Thew views from Lake Motosuko are very good, enough in fact to be immortalized on the current ¥1,000 bank note (and previous ¥5,000), as seen below (you’ll have to imagine the snow). The location of this shot is here and is best viewed during early spring when the snow on Mount Fuji is at a peak. It will take about an hour to walk round from the populated side of the lake and in winter may be impossible to traverse due to road closures (although unlikely as the lakes don’t get that much snow at ground level).

You can see Mount Fuji from most of the lake apart from the very far west side, which you probably won’t be going to anyway.

Access to Lake Motosuko

You can take a bus from Lake Kawaguchiko or else from Lake Saiko if you change at the Wind Caves. The last bus back is 17:25 so don’t be lake.
