Kyushu is the large island to the west of Japan about 2 hours flight or 5 hours train ride from Tokyo. Kyushu is a largely untapped area that is still fairly accessible and is a must for those up for the challenge of travel in proper Japanese countryside.

Access to Kyushu is either direct to one of the numerous airports or else by Shikansen into Hakata Station in Fukuoka, which takes 5 hours from Tokyo. Due to the distance, and the limited travel options around Kyushu, most Japanese will fly direct to one of the airports, especially when the destination is on the eastern side of the island (the Shinkansen line only extends down the western side).

Most people in the west will know about Nagasaki and most recently Kumamoto. The rest of the area is largely devoid of tourists especially towards the southern tip, where the local dialects are so thick even Japanese from the main islands have trouble catching a few words.
